Grade 5: Dec. 13- 16

GRADE 5

Here is what we will be covering in class next week:

French: Students will be learning about making inferences when reading.

Math: We will continue to practice long division.

English: Students will finish writing their Christmas stories. They are due on Thursday.

Social Studies: Students will start learning about chapter 4: the Canadian Shield.

Religion: Students will be learning about Advent, week 3. In addition, they will learn about the Huron Carol.

Grade 4: Dec. 13- 16

GRADE 4

Here is what we will be covering in class next week:

French: Students will finish writing a descriptive piece to show their knowledge and understanding of proper verb conjugation in the present tense. They will imagine that the objects in the classroom have come alive, and they will describe what is happening. This is due on Thursday.
A reminder that the French Reading Program is due on MONDAY. Students should be reading out loud for 20 minutes a day in Frenchfour times a week for a total of 80 minutes.

Math:  We will complete fun activities involving addition and subtraction.

English: Students will finish writing their Christmas stories. The final copy is due on Thursday.

Science: Students will present their project where they imagine an environmental organization and how it can help to protect Earth.

Social Studies: Students will present their projects about a wild animal of Alberta. Then we will start to learn about the Rocky Mountains.

Religion: Students will be learning about Advent, week 3. In addition, students will learn about the Huron Carol.

French: Students will be learning about homophones. There will be an evaluation on Friday.

Math: We will continue module 3, multiplication and division. We will finish our unit on long multiplication. There will be an evaluation on Tuesday. Then we will move on to division.

English: Students will be learning about narrative writing. They will plan and write Christmas stories.

Social Studies: Students will start presenting their individual projects about the Lake Region of Canada.

Religion: Students will be learning about Advent, week 2. In addition, they will learn about the Huron Carol.

Grade 4: Dec. 6- 10

French: Students will be learning about the ‘imparfait’ for ER, IR and irregular verbs. There will be an evaluation on Friday.

Math: We will continue module 3, multiplication and division. We will be covering long multiplication.

English: We will complete our unit on spelling rules with suffixes, plural and past tense. There will be an evaluation on Wednesday. Then students will complete some reading comprehension activities.

Social Studies: Students will continue with their individual projects about the Lake Region of Canada.

Religion: Students will be learning about Advent, week 1. In addition, they will have an introduction to unit 2: Called to Gather in Faith.

Grade 4: Nov. 29- Dec. 3

GRADE 4

Here is what we will be covering in class next week:

French: Students will be reviewing all of the verbs learned thus far in the present tense (AVOIR, ÊTRE, ER, IR and ALLER). There will be a pretest on Monday (not for marks) and an evaluation on Friday. In addition, students will be learning about irregular verbs.
A reminder that the French Reading Program is due on MONDAY. Students should be reading out loud for 20 minutes a day in Frenchfour times a week for a total of 80 minutes.

Math:  We will finish our unit on subtraction. There will be an evaluation on Thursday. We will then move on to addition vs. subtraction.

English: We will complete our unit on homophones, synonyms and antonyms. There will be an evaluation on Wednesday. Then we will move on to reading comprehension.

Science: Students will research environmental organizations and how they help to protect Earth.

Social Studies: Students will continue research projects on a wild animal of Alberta.

Religion: Students will be learning about Advent, week 1. In addition, students will have an introduction to unit 2: A New Beginning.

French: Students will finish writing their personal letters. They are due on Tuesday. Students will also complete reading comprehension activities.

Math: We will continue module 3, multiplication and division. Students should be practicing their basic multiplication facts. There will be an evaluation on Thursday.

English: We will complete our unit on sentence structure. There will be an evaluation on Tuesday on fragments, run-on sentences, and sentences. Then we will start a unit on rules of spelling with suffixes, past tense, and plural words.

Social Studies: Students will continue with their individual projects about the Lake Region of Canada.

Religion: Students will be reviewing unit 1.

Grade 4: Nov. 22- 26

GRADE 4

Here is what we will be covering in class next week:

French: Students will be learning about the verb ALLER in the present tense. There will be an evaluation on Friday.
A reminder that the French Reading Program is due on MONDAY. Students should be reading out loud for 20 minutes a day in Frenchfour times a week for a total of 80 minutes.

Math:  We will be continuing with unit 2, with a focus on subtraction.

English: We will complete our unit on sentence structure. There will be an evaluation on Tuesday on fragments, run-on sentences, and sentences. Then students will start a unit on homophones, synonyms, and antonyms.

French: Students will be learning about transition words in writing. They will also write personal letters and apply those transition words.

Math: We will continue module 3, multiplication and division. Students should be practicing their basic multiplication facts up to 9 X 9.

English: Students will continue with the unit on sentence structure.

Social Studies: There will be an evaluation on chapter 2 on Tuesday. Then we will move on to chapter 3. We will also be celebrating Métis Week.

Religion: Students will continue to learn about the following theme: Models of a Holy Life.

A REMINDER THAT MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH, IS ODD SOCKS DAY. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO WEAR MISMATCHED SOCKS.

French: Students will continue working on a writing assignment where they describe what a school is. It is due on Friday. In addition, we will start to learn about verbs ending in ER in the present tense.
A reminder that the French Reading Program is due on TUESDAY. Students should be reading out loud for 20 minutes a day in Frenchfour times a week for a total of 80 minutes.

Math:  We will continue with our unit on addition. There will be an evaluation on Thursday on estimating sums.

English: Students will continue to learn about punctuation.

Science: The second evaluation on Waste in our World is on Wednesday. Students are also asked to bring a piece of cardboard (approximately 1 ft. x 1 ft.) for a Science/ Art project.

Social Studies: Students will review Alberta’s origins.

Religion: Students will continue to learn about the following theme: How our Faith makes us One. They will also discuss the seven sacraments and service: message of gratitude for a veteran.

Social Studies: Students will start chapter 2. They will be learning about the provinces in the Atlantic region of Canada.

Here is what we will be covering in class next week:

French:  Students will learn about adjectives. There will be an evaluation on Friday. Students will need to know the proper form of adjectives for the following formats: masculine singular, masculine plural, feminine singular and feminine plural.
A reminder that the French Reading Program is due on TUESDAY. Students should be reading out loud for 20 minutes a day in Frenchfour times a week for a total of 80 minutes.

Math:  We will continue with our unit on whole numbers. Students should know their numbers up to 9 999 in French. There will be an evaluation on Thursday. Students will be comparing numbers and organizing them into Venn diagrams.

English: Students will be working on an assignment where they write a letter and pretend to invite someone to come and visit Calgary. It is due on Monday.

Science: We will continue part two of our unit on Waste in Our World. Students will be learning about some of the WHMIS hazard symbols, as well as the role that landfills play to properly dispose of waste.

Social Studies: Students will continue to learn about Alberta’s origins.

Religion: Students will continue to learn about the following theme: Called to be One: The Books of the Old Testament.

English: Students will be writing an epilogue to Secret Signs. In addition, they will be completing reading comprehension activities.

Social Studies: Students will continue to learn about the geography of Canada. There will be an evaluation on Wednesday. Students will be required to name the provinces, territories and capital cities of Canada.

Religion: Students will be learning about what helps us grow in Faith.

Students will be reviewing how to conjugate the verbs AVOIR and ÊTRE in the present and past tenses. There will be an evaluation on Wednesday. They will also be doing some journal writing.

Math: We will continue with unit 2 on whole numbers. Students are learning how to represent 6-digit numbers in different ways.

English: Students will be reading short stories and responding to them in writing. I will also be reading from Secret Signs by Jacqueline Guest.

Social Studies: Students will learn about the landforms and climate of Canada.

Religion: Students will be writing prayers.

Grade 4: Sep. 20- 22

GRADE 4

Here is what we will be covering in class next week:

French:  Students will learn how to properly conjugate the verb ÊTRE in the present tense. There will be an evaluation on Wednesday. In addition, I will be presenting the French Reading Program to the students. They should be reading out loud for 20 minutes a day in French, four times a week for a total of 80 minutes.

Math:  We will continue with our unit on patterns. Students should be practicing their numbers up to 100 in French.

English: Students will be finishing the assignment called the “I Can” hand. It is due on Wednesday. I will also be reading from Secret Signs by Jacqueline Guest.

Science: We will continue to learn about the role decomposers play in turning waste into nutrient-rich soil.

Social Studies: Students will look at the geography of the Prairies, as well as taking a closer look at Alberta.

Religion: Students will be writing prayers.
